Platforms

Platforms are collections of services, applications, tooling, APIs, and even bounded contexts that provide common, often self-service, functions to multiple, often all, value streams. A platform brings together a set of independently evolving functions into a cohesive whole that can be depended on across your whole architecture.

When you need to establish common, consistently managed and evolved sets of functionality that can be reused across multiple value chains, you have the opportunity for a platform. You have to be careful not to cause too much friction between the different rates of change across the platform’s functions to optimize the maneuverability required by market and business changes. This is often done by decomposing a platform internally into bounded contexts, applications, and services. Platforms are a great option when you want to serve several value streams across your organization with a single, consistent capability. Good examples are self-service application platforms-as-a-service (PaaS) such as Red Hat OpenShift.
